Why Seattle Chicken Teriyaki Is Philadelphia's Best Kept Lunch Secret
Every city has its iconic lunch. Philadelphia has cheesesteaks. New York has pizza. Seattle? It has chicken teriyaki.
Most people don't realize that Seattle-style chicken teriyaki is an entire food culture of its own. Found in neighborhood restaurants across the Pacific Northwest, it's comfort food built around perfectly grilled chicken, steamed rice, fresh vegetables, and an unforgettable sweet-savory glaze. Our co-founder Michelle was born and raised in Seattle. Her mother’s family immigrated from South Korea. Several of her aunts and uncles worked in Korean owned Seattle Teriyaki shops. This dish has a special place in her heart.
At The Ground Coffee, Plants & Gifts, we wanted to introduce Philadelphia to the real thing.
Unlike overly sugary bottled sauces, we make our teriyaki sauce in-house using gluten-free soy sauce, fresh aromatics, and carefully balanced ingredients that create deep flavor without becoming heavy.
Our chicken is marinated before grilling, developing caramelized edges while staying incredibly juicy inside. We butcher our chicken thighs with the skin on to ensure a crispy addition to the dish. Every bowl is served over perfectly steamed rice alongside our signature Seattle-style creamy salad. We also have a ribeye bulgogi beef option as well as a vegan tofu version as well.
